New Zealand Cycle Touring Route - Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is a good destination for a cycle touring because it includes fantastic beaches and wineries and there is a camping ground where you can enjoy the beach right at your doorstep.

Waiheke Island is in the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand and is about 17.7km from Auckland City by ferry and is hilly but has many scenic beaches that are well worth visiting. My favourite seen above and you should head here to start with.
It is only 11 kilometers from the ferry landing and the distances are not great on the island but there are lots of hills along the way. My next destination is usually Palm beach to try the fish and chips. You can spend an enjoyable day beach hopping in Waiheke before heading back to the big smoke.
An alternative is to camp overnight at the Whakanewha regional park on the southern side of Waiheke island. To book campsites at this regional park ring the Auckland Council before arriving at the park.
