In New Zealand cycle
helmets are compulsory. Some cyclists argue that making the wearing of cycle
helmets does not contribute significantly to the cyclists safety and that
debate on this issue is a diversion from the more important cyclist safety
issues such as ensuring that cyclists obey the road laws and improving cycleways.
This is a valid
viewpoint but cyclists in New Zealand must, under the law, wear helmets so
that if they fall of their bike and hit their head on the pavement that they
have some protection however minimal. In New Zealand accident costs are met by
the taxpayer and not the individual so the argument for compulsory helmets is
stronger than in counties where the
injured parties meet their own accident costs.
